Project Alternatives
Welcome to the Project Alternatives page for the New Mix. The project alternatives are a collection of potential concepts for the Mixmaster interchange’s long‑term future reconstruction.
As a result of the New Mix Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) Study, two project alternatives are moving forward to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) phase for further evaluation. The advancing alternatives (Reasonable Range of Alternatives) are the Naugatuck River Shift and the Modern Crossover Interchange. Explore these alternatives below!
Advancing Project Alternatives
Modern Crossover Interchange
The Route 8 structures would be reconstructed east of the Naugatuck River resulting in opportunities to provide access to the Naugatuck River on the west riverbank.
View the Modern Crossover Interchange alternative through this flyover video!
The flyover video above shows the Modern Crossover alternative. However, the frontage road systems, open spaces, and bike/pedestrian infrastructure would be similar in the Naugatuck River Shift alternative.

Naugatuck River Shift
The Route 8 structures would remain on the west side of the river resulting in opportunities to provide access to the Naugatuck River on the east riverbank. Excavation activities would need to occur to provide floodplain capacity due to unstacking of Route 8.
